Visiting Leiden

Visiting

Leiden is an authentic Dutch city with a rich tradition of knowledge, science, culture and international relations. A city with beautiful canals, almost 3,000 monuments, 12 leading museums and a vibrant city centre.

Walking through Leiden, you can feel the city's rich history come to life. Everything from the university's Academiegebouw (the school's ceremonial seat) to De Waag (the Weigh House), De Burcht (the Citadel), the stately mansions lining the famous Rapenburg canal, the glorious churches including Pieterskerk (church of Peter) and Hooglandse Kerk (the Highland church), and the 35 hofjes or almshouses all tell the story of Leiden's history.

Leiden is where Rembrandt was born and learned the art of painting, where the physician Boerhaave taught and where Clusius cultivated the first Dutch tulips 400 years ago. You will undoubtedly agree that Leiden deserves the title 'Leiden, Key to Discovery'.
